Week 10 - Tutorial task

Essay plan week 10

I have chosen to do my essay on “Does the extensive use of computer/video games have an adverse impact on the health of young people. What are the most recent papers? Clarify what both sides of the argument claim and only then offer your reasoned opinion based on facts.”
There are several studies on the topic that says video games has a positive impact on children’s health and education, such as health hero games which educates the players about different health related topics and plays the part of a role-model,  such as “Packy and Marlon” a game that teaches children about diabetes and healthy food.

Gentile, Lynch, Linder & Walsh (2004, p.6) "adolescent girls played video games for an average of 5 hours a week, whereas boys averaged 13 hours a week". The authors also stated that teens who play violent video games for extended periods of time:
-           Tend to be more aggressive
-            Are more prone to confrontation with their teachers
-           May engage in fights with their peers
-           See a decline in school achievements. (Gentile et al, 2004).

The interactive quality of video games differs from passively viewing television or movies because it allows players to become active participants in the game's script. Players benefit from engaging in acts of violence and are then able to move to the game's next level.
Reference: Gentile, D. A. & Anderson, C. A. (2003). Violent video games: The newest media violence hazard. In D. A. Gentile (Ed.), Media violence and children. Westport, CT: Praeger Publishing.

Video and computer games can have various effects on young people’s health depending on the content of the games they are playing. There is both negative and positive effects on the health of young people.

TOPICS OF DISCUSSION
What is your favourite cyberpunk production? Movie? Book? Graphic Novel?

The Matrix, the movie is kinetic, atmospheric and visually stunning. It toys with the boundaries between reality and fantasy in unique and interesting ways. The Matrix is undeniably cyber punk, it ventures into territory that, while not virgin, is sufficiently interesting to provide an involving, invigorating backdrop.

What is happening in Burning Chrome?
Burning Chrome is about two hackers who hack systems for profit. The two main characters are Bobby Quine who specializes in software and Automatic Jack who specializes in hardware. Rikki is a girl with who Bobby becomes in love with, and he wants to hit it big. Automatic Jack gets a piece of Russian hacking software that is very sophisticated and hard to trace. Bobby decides to break into the system of a notorious and vicious criminal called Chrome, and Automatic Jack agrees to help. The break-in is successful, but Rikki decides to leave the group and go to Hollywood, to the grief of Bobby and Jack who has grown to love her.

    Is anime cyberpunk?

Yes, Anime and Manga is cyberpunk it shows the possibilities inherent in computers, genetics, body modifications and corporate developments in the near future. This is the definition of Cyberpunk

    Is cyberpunk sexist? Explain.

Personally I don’t think Cyberpunk is anymore sexist than any other genera of Movie, book or Graphic Novel. It has a storyline with people and feelings like everything else. In fact it’s less sexist because in cyberpunk people even fall in love with others that are “different” from them selves

Cyberpunk is thirty years old and fantasy is the clear winner in the genre stakes. What does that say about the future?

You can never really predict how its going to be in the future, you can only imagine. And fantasy has also given us ideas to try to make new inventions.

What is cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk is a genre within science fiction that came out in the 1980’s. The action takes place mostly in the near future on Earth, often in dystopian urban communities. Cyberpunk is mainly targeted at computers and ICT, but it’s also in the extraordinary energy and diversity. This is a result of self-correction in the science fiction genre, which had traditionally ignored the information technology importance. Cyberpunks dystopian world has been called antithesis of the utopian science fiction that Star Trek versions is a good example of. In cyberpunk much of the action takes place online, and the distinction between the real and the virtual world can be somewhat diffuse. Some theorists see the cyberpunk stories as fictional forecasts of the Internet's development. Internet's virtual world occurs under various names, such as cyberspace, the Metaverse and The Matrix.

Week 9 - Tutorial Task

Blog post 1

The topic I have chosen for my essay is nr 2: Does the extensive use of computer/video games have an adverse impact on the health of young people? What are the most recent papers? Clarify what both sides of the argument claim and only then offer your reasoned opinion based on facts.

So what I am going to do is:
-        -  Doing some research on papers that involves computer and video games and how they affect young people today.
-       -   Sort out what papers are more recent and relevant for young people today, and then compare them to the older papers.
-       -   Do a discussion augmenting both sides
-       -  Write my conclusion and reasoned opinion based on my research and facts. ______________________________

Blog post 2

What opportunities can you find for political participation via the internet. How many of the following can you achieve while sticking to your political beliefs?

   * Sign an e-petition.
At first I had no Idea what an e-petition was. I’m not sure if I want to sign one because there is nothing at that I would die to sign my name on at the moment. I don’t like signing random stuff just out of the blue without knowing if it’s a scam or not. There are so many fake “e-petitions” out there that’s out to get your personal information and scam you.
    * What is Barak Obama up to today? Can you send him a message about the importance of freedom on the internet? At the moment it seems like Obama is considering raising the tax rates of wealthy people, he is planning to cut the debt by $3.1 billion over the next decade, by raising the taxes.
    * What are the Australian Government's plans to censor the internet (the so-called "Clean Feed")?
They are planning to block access to sites that has material that has adult content and illigal sites such as child sexual abuse on a black list provided by Interpol.
    * What place does censorship have in a democracy?
Censorship contradicts the elements of a democracy. The freedom of knowledge and learning is a important element of democracy and people have the right to self-censor and manage their children exposure to the internet personally.
* When will the NBN get to your place?   What are the benefits?
in the FAQ section on the iinet website, it states that the internet coverage provided by the NBN will be 12 times faster than the ADSL 2+ now offered - http://www.iinet.net.au/nbn/nbn-coverage.html. The website also has a map to record which areas have been activated, and when it is coming to certain areas:

Whats the difference between Open software and Free software?

The term "free software" was coined by Richard Stallman, and is associated with the 'Free software oundation'. The term "open source" was coined by Eric Raymond and is advocated by him and other people at the 'Open source Initiative'. However, "Open software" and "Free software" are the same it just changed name to Open software to not cause any confusion about it being "free" and not cheap, that it is free and you can change the programming codes.

Week 7 Tutorial Task

Prosess

My group has decided to make a movie about communication technologies and when we use them. Originally we were supposed to make up a ‘fake’ person and see how easy it is to fool people on the internet about who you really are, but we soon found out that it required more time than planned. So we settled with plan B. In our progress we have started filming and editing so hopefully our movie is ready soon.

Week 7 - Response to content

Wikipedia is useful for basic information that you can further research on. It’s a great place to begin your research.

I have edited Wikipedia before it’s about 6 years ago, back when anyone could write anything on Wikipedia. I and my friends made a wiki page about our friend Kim. It was something along those lines of “Kim is a lonely creature who lives in an apartment above Coop Mega. Kim’s main nutrition is Nutella and spagballs”. Great fun for everyone involved. It was taken down after about a month. Now the average person can’t change anything on Wikipedia unless you they have permission like a certificate.

Facebook works because everyone uses it. It has become like a daily newspaper where you see news and storylines about your friends, family and acquaintances. It’s an easy way to communicate with people, send messages and be up to date on what other people are doing. It works because people are curious about other people in their lives.
In order for me to delete my Facebook, would be if everybody else I knew deleted theirs.

Week 6 Tutorial Task

1. Windows Live Movie Maker
To import files from wherever you just upload them to t your computer and go into Movie Maker and click on “Drag videos and photos here or click to browse for them”, then you choose a file or an image to drag into the Movie maker. To edit the time of pictures to longer or shorter time you click “video tools” and adjust “duration”. To transition images, you go to the Animations tab and choose a transition that you want.

2. Copyright
To avoid copyright violation, make sure you acknowledge the person that has the copyrights.  To do so is simple, just put the source on the end of your movie or under the picture whichever is appropriate.

3. Defamation
Defamation of character can do serious harm to a business, product or service, group, organization, and even race. In a general sense, defamation of character refers mainly to a written statement or claim or broadcast made against another that creates a negative image. These statements or claims may be considered factual or true, but are still treated as a crime.
Those who commit defamation of character usually consist of competitors, former disgruntled employees, and dissatisfied customers. These are the most common. However, there are also people out there who do it just to get a kick out of it.

Week 6 - Response to content

Hollywood vs. Internet

Is downloading killing Hollywood or could it be the path to new beginnings? No, Internet is not Killing Hollywood not when it comes to cinema. Cinema has been standing still slightly for the last decade with no new ground breaking technology since the ability to create photo-realistic digital effects and digital projection besides 3D which has proved to be more of a gimmick that is warming out its welcome among film-goers.

Internet needs Hollywood in order to have great movies to download. Internet is also used to commercialize trailers for Hollywood. People still like going to the movies, not just for the film’s sake but also cause it are a couple and group activity. However when it comes to everyday movies that you rent in your local blockbuster, yes downloading is easier. If you could choose between downloading a movie for free at home, or get dressed, get out, take the bus or drive somewhere, pay for the move and interact with other human beings on a shitty day, what would you do? Of course you choose to stay home, it saves you bus fare / petrol money and you can do it in your underwear.
